Over the past nine years, Loyola College's contribution to higher education has been strong and significant as educational pioneers who have created a wealth of expertise and best practices to encourage and emulate other educational institutions.

In 1978, Loyola was one of the first eight colleges to receive autonomous status, which helped the college develop its educational policies for admission, which focused on providing a University Education in a Christian context to deserving students, especially Catholics, Dalits and disadvantaged sections. society.

One of the college's best programs and the only one of its kind to emerge in the 1970s was the two-year Diploma in Visual Communications offered as an evening program by the Loyola Institute of Visual Communications (LIVCOM). Due to outstanding recognition from the media industry, the college launched a full degree in visual communication in 1989.

Emphasizing Ignatian pedagogy and spirituality, the Basic Course is designed to train our country's future leaders. The program is run by a separate educational unit, the School of Human Excellence (SHE), which is dedicated to guiding students in their mission to become men and women and others in society.

Loyola has a strong research tradition. It is the only College of Arts and Science to be featured in Current Science Magazine for research on world development. Loyola is the only College of Arts and Sciences in India to be recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Government of India.

Loyola College's most significant contribution to higher education and society is the many Good Samaritan services it provides to the student community.

Loyola College has set a precedent across the country in its pioneering efforts to serve diverse students. It has a unique facility, the Resource Center for Persons with Different Disabilities (RCDA), established with funding received from UGC-HEPSN and the National Institute on Disability (NIVH), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. RCDA was selected to serve as a Model Resource Center for Disability Services (MRCDS), the first of its kind in the country to address the needs of diverse learners with digital skills and resources.

A private service delivery unit, LSSS, was established to provide educational, financial and personal support services such as Scholarship, Management Concession, Free Midday Meal, Special English Program, Supplementary Education, Special Guidance, Rehabilitation Programs, Personality Development through Life Skills, art. and Books and Special Help for International Students. One of its main objectives is to enable students from the marginalized section of society, especially Dalits, to face life's challenges with dignity.

Loyola pays close attention to the personal and emotional well-being of students through counseling conducted primarily by AURA, the college's Counseling Center. Loyola is proud to be a pioneer among educational institutions with professional counselors working full-time to address students' needs and problems on an internal, relational and social level.

Loyola has a strong commitment to shaping students through academic training. Academic staff are trained to deal with young people who wish to become mentors to guide, support and resolve academic and personal issues and help them successfully complete their studies.

Spring 2023 Academic Calendar

Loyola offers significant financial aid to students with financial need. Every semester, the college administration provides a grant through Jesuit Education Support (JES) to students from poor families. In 2018-19, the college provided Rs 1.60 crore as administrative fees to 260 students.

One of the best practices for which Loyola is widely known in the national higher education arena is its ongoing efforts to reach out to the local community for inclusive assistance.

The college entered a unique service by starting Loyola FM 107.4, a community radio frequency over 15 km. Through Loyola Community Radio, the college tackles various issues related to the neighborhood by broadcasting various special programs on Transgenders, Gypsies, Widows, Graphics, Street Vendors, Slum Dwellers, Truck Drivers etc.

Incoming Students: Spring Start

Another unique service that stood out among educational institutions across the country was the launch of LRRS during the November 2015 monsoon, which started providing food and supplies to flood-affected people living in designated areas of Chennai city. Loyola Rain Relief Services had 30 employees and 250 active volunteers and a medical staff of 8 doctors providing treatment to approximately 1750 flood victims living in the Loyola area. Through LRRS, a water relief camp was set up for postgraduate students to bring their work to water-affected areas, especially those affected by the Gaja storm in November 2018.

Another unique activity of the college is the pioneering of community service through the Outreach Program which operates within the School of Service Studies. The college occupied around 50 plots (villages or residential areas) around the college which fall under zones 50, 7 and 8 of the Chennai Corporation. UG students have to do 120 hours of community service and postgraduate students visit villages and experience life at the community level to prepare themselves to serve these disadvantaged people in their future.

Since 1925, Loyola College has contributed greatly to the growth of the world economy, the formation of bright minds and the formation of new leaders of the future according to the college's motto, forming men and women in the service of others. ACTI is committed to interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration in the Catholic University. This interdisciplinary focus allows students from all colleges and schools of the University to participate in this scholarship opportunity. ACTI scholarships are available to continuing and tenured faculties with the option of awarding at least one scholarship to applications from faculties other than Philosophy and Theology.

ACTI Fellowships provide opportunities for LMU faculty to complete a major research/design project or focus on a critical research/design project aligned with the Catholic School of Catholic Thought and Imagination. Such programs can take many forms: developing, criticizing, expanding, expanding, questioning or explaining various traditional Catholic ideas or concerns. engage in dialogue with Catholic ideas or assumptions from the point of view of different religious or non-religious traditions; use the resources of the Catholic tradition to understand and respond to contemporary issues; to create a creative work in dialogue with the imaginative and intellectual concepts of Catholic tradition and so on
