2023-2024 Ucsd Academic Calendar – The Making of the Modern World (MMW) is an interdisciplinary general education program at Eleanor Roosevelt College (ERC), one of the seven graduate colleges of the University of California, San Diego. MMW is grounded in world history and offers university-level instruction in academic research and writing.
Since 1988, when the program and the college were founded, MMW has been at the core of ERC's general educational requirements and serves as the academic expression of a fundamental aspect of the college's mission, namely, "to present international understanding and cultural dimensions. Diversity," and Required of all ERC students.

MMW is taught on and off campus in seminars worldwide. MMW has led 37 programs abroad on six continents (since 2008) for over 800 students. Additionally, in AY2017-18 MMW launched MMW SERVES, which combines MMW courses with spring break service experiences in CA, the American Southwest, and Mexico.

Courses. MMW is a five-course sequence, a lower division for students entering as freshmen (MMW11 – MMW15) and a two-course sequence, an upper division for transfer students (MMW121 – MMW122).
Between 1988–2010, MMW was a six-course series (numbered MMW 1 – MMW 6), which was revised to the current five-course sequence in the 2011–12 school year. Fall 2011 also witnessed the opening of transfer-specific MMW courses, which were initially lower division (MMW21 and MMW22) and then became upper division in 2014 (MMW121 and MMW122), corresponding to transfer students' upper division status. In 2022, the course names and course descriptions of MMW11-15 have been changed. Thank you for your interest in UC San Diego to prospective students! Before applying, students must be nominated by their home university. All interested students should contact the study abroad office or the international exchange office of their home university to learn about the nomination process.
The application form will ask you to submit some documents. You must submit all required documents for your application to be considered.
UC San Diego operates on a quarter basis rather than a semester basis. Exchange students can come to the University of San Diego during the fall, winter, and spring quarters. The exchange program does not cover summer courses. For the start and end dates for each quarter, holiday, and final exam period, please refer to the UC San Diego Academic Calendar for your academic term.

Full-time Enrollment: International students must enroll in at least 12 units each academic quarter to maintain their visa. Not taking 16 units or more per quarter is highly recommended.
For graduate students, please refer to the specific department website for courses typically offered for each quarter. For graduate students, you can find available courses through the program website.
Please note that the course catalog for each quarter is not final until much closer to the start date of the quarter. Therefore, when searching for courses, use the current academic year's course offerings as a guide to decide which courses you want to take and which quarter they will be offered. There is usually little variation with course offerings in other academic years. If a course is not available, consult with your academic advisor during enrollment to review alternative courses and which will count toward your degree requirements at your home university.

Fees: Although tuition is waived for exchange students, some courses may charge nominal fees such as material fees or laboratory fees. Fees will be charged to your student account prior to the start of the quarter. We cannot waive this required fee for certain courses.
Accommodation, particularly on-campus accommodation, is not arranged or guaranteed for exchange students. Our offices will try to help exchange students provide as many housing options as possible, but ultimately housing and all housing-related costs are the student's responsibility.
Campus Housing: The Office of Housing, Dining and Hospitality (HDH) manages all campus housing. If you plan to live on campus, visit the HDH website for information, applications, and deadlines.

Please note that UC San Diego is located in an affluent neighborhood in San Diego. So the cost of living is high even by California standards. Please keep this in mind when considering UC San Diego as a study abroad option.
The most common visa for exchange students is the J-1 (Exchange Visitor) student visa. If you are a US citizen or permanent resident, you do not need a student visa.
Local College Events
All students are automatically enrolled in the UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP) and are responsible for paying for their coverage for the plan. Students who are currently covered by private health insurance and do not wish to be covered by UC SHIP may submit an online application to opt out of UC SHIP. A study abroad program at The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (or its French acronym EPFL). Lausanne is the fourth largest city in Switzerland and has been the Olympic capital of the world since 1994.
Ac Léman (Leman) At one end of the city and the Jura at the other, there is a breathtaking view everywhere you look. Lausanne is located in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, and both France and Geneva are a boat ride away!

EPFL's internationally renowned School of Basic Sciences offers UC San Diego students access to English-language courses in physics, mathematics, chemistry and biochemistry and research opportunities in one of EPFL's laboratories.
To participate in an exchange program, you must first be nominated by UC San Diego before applying. To be considered for an appointment, please make an appointment with a study abroad advisor through the Virtual Advising Center (VAC).
Remote Final Exam Option: Students can request a remote exam according to the procedure you can find on this page (see Exams). There is no guarantee that professors will agree to arrange remote exams. Students can also search for courses that have exams during the semester.

Students are advised to arrive at least one week before the start of each semester for welcome events and other activities that help students adjust to EPFL.

Participants in the EPFL research program will receive a stipend for participation. Students should also visit the ThinkSwiss program page for funding for other research and internship opportunities.
Students can also receive credit designed with a professor during an exchange semester with coursework. I am pleased to share with you a wonderful internship opportunity in San Diego with the office of County Supervisor Joel Anderson, District 2. , policy research, constituent correspondence, work with government agencies, research projects, assisting with community outreach programs, public speaking, participating in community events on behalf of the supervisor, and preparing and presenting certificates of recognition. They also have a media department where interns have the opportunity to research, write and polish articles and stories for publication in local newspapers, their newsletters and online outlets.
