In a 6-1 vote, with two board members present, the Aiken County Board of Education approved a revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at Tuesday night's meeting.
With the revised calendar, students will have a shorter summer and will instead have a two-week break in the fall and spring semesters. One of the weeks of each semester will be Remedial Week, which will allow students who need academic help to receive it.
The revised 2023-24 calendar has students beginning classes on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Winter vacation for October 2-13 and October 2-6 is intercession week. The break lasts from November 22 to 24. New Year vacation for students will be from December 20, 2023 to January 3, 2024. Spring vacation is scheduled from April 1 to 12 and prayer week from April 1 to 5, 2024. The last day of class will be Thursday, May. . 30, 2024.

Other holidays on the proposed calendar include Labor Day on September 4, 2023; weather repair day on Friday, October 20; Martin Luther King Jr. On January 15; Holiday and President's Day Friday, February 16 and Monday, February 19, 2024; weather on Thursday March 28; and Good Friday on Friday, March 29, 2024.
Board member Jason Crane was the lone voice against the calendar. During the meeting, he reiterated his concern that the calendar would affect several programs, including Gateway's athletics, band and art programs.
The Aiken County Board of Education will vote on a proposed calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday.

"I'm concerned that the short season … will affect the sport, the band and Gateway," Crain said after the meeting. "I'm sure the district will take care of it, but I also feel it's too bad for us. I voted my conscience."
Crain added that he supports the concept of a modified calendar, with only two weeks off each semester, which gives him a break.
"… I'm not sold on the fact that we need two weeks for this break," Crain said. "I think a week will be enough, but the board voted for what we voted for, and I'm moving forward."

During the meeting, Aiken County Supervisor King Lawrence said the summer of 2023 will be difficult for group practice because there is always three weeks of summer camp. But there are several options for group leaders.
Lawrence noted that the tournament is organized by the state and that there are different school schedules throughout South Carolina. He also suggested having a week-long group camp during the summer and using prayer sessions for additional group camps.

"Yeah, you're used to having a three-week team camp in the summer, but what about a one-week camp in the summer and using those interim periods for additional team camps," Lawrence said. "Two weeks of group camp in the summer and another week in the fall. I'm just saying people have to look at things a little differently and get used to it."
Regarding the sports schedules, Lawrence said that the tournament schedules are organized by the government, so they will not be affected much. Practices should be adjusted, especially summer practices and their timings.
"Football and other summer sports are definitely going to have (games) this break," Lawrence said. "It's no different than basketball on Christmas break, baseball and softball on spring break."

Another concern was how the two weeks of recovery would work. Crain said he's not sure the two-week break will serve its purpose and has heard from other people who feel the same way.
The Aiken County Board of Education approved the revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday night.
"We have the opportunity to get 30 minutes of intervention into each of our days (during the school year)," Lawrence said. "Thirty minutes of intervention for our students in a group is a great, great intervention… If we look at a five-hour day in that intervention time, that's 10 times what they get in a typical school day. Five. days they get 50 times more than one school day. That one week of intervention can equate to 50 days of intervention per school year, 30 minutes at a time."

"Everything we do for these students is designed to help them succeed next quarter," Lawrence said. "I think we can do some good things this week. We actually heard from a school district a few weeks ago that saw results with a week of intervention."
As for Gateway, Lawrence said it should be 30 days, and they're looking at how to get those days to 30. The options he mentioned include 20 or 25 days in the summer and five days in the fall, or five days in the summer and spring.
"If you follow the first year, everything is easier because you have an extra week," Lawrence said. "An extra week doesn't seem like much, but it gives you more flexibility in planning your summer."

Chairman of the school council, Dr. John Bradley said he was skeptical about the revised calendar, but the fact that many respondents supported it helped him decide to approve it.
"I'm going to vote for it because I know we're going to cause a lot of problems for some people," Bradley said. "I apologize for that. But again, I feel like we have to do what most people want, with no reason or too many reasons not to do it.
Board members approved the draft calendar at their January 25 meeting, but did not approve the actual calendar at that time.
