When To Visit Disney World 2022 + Disney World Crowd Calendar
We'll explain exactly what a crowd calendar is, why it's useful, and why you can't always rely on it 100%. And if you happen to be in a Disney World park on a very busy day, we'll help you avoid the crowds as much as possible and make the most of it.
Our Disney World Crowd calendar is based on expected attendance and will indicate the exact dates when you are least likely to find theme parks full of people. When doing this, many factors are taken into account, such as school schedules, events, holidays and more, giving you the best possible chance of going on the right days.
Congestion levels are not the only factor to consider when deciding when to plan your trip. For a more balanced view, read our guide to the best times to visit Disney World in 2022, which looks at crowds, weather, park hours, and prices, among other things. (Update 12/26/21) – We've updated our crowd calendar to reflect the latest crowd predictions for early 2022 and beyond.
Disney World In August 2021
As if planning a Disney audience calendar in 2022 wasn't already difficult enough, things got even more difficult with the closing of the Disney World parks last year. To predict what may happen for the rest of this year, we need to take a closer look at what has happened so far since the reopening phase began.
With congestion levels increasing since the parks reopened, we'll discuss whether or not we expect to see the same increase in 2022, or if it could drop back down to where it was expected.
Just a word of warning, since the parks reopened any traditional Disney World crowd calendar has been thrown out the window as attendance has been extremely difficult to predict with any reliability up to this point.
Dates To Consider When Booking Your Disney World 2023 Vacations
Some of our predictions for 2021 came true (in general, it was one of the least crowded years in the history of Disney World), however, with so many unexpected factors, we were seriously wrong. Any predictions for 2022 should be taken with caution, as this year has been more difficult than ever to understand the crowds.
2021 was an interesting year to say the least and we had no idea how the audience level would react throughout the year. There were many unknown factors that played a role, such as the current health crisis, the economy and the willingness of guests to travel in general (this does not mean that this has changed for 2022).
Walt Disney World continues with the phased reopening that began with Disney's Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, EPCOT and Hollywood studios in 2020. And things haven't returned to normal yet, which is why Disney still refers to the present as a phased reopening.
The Best Times To Visit Disney World In 2022 And 2023
In the last year, in general, congestion levels have been very low compared to what they normally are. Theme parks are sometimes like ghost towns in 2020, and while they were quite low in 2021, if you go on the right week, many attractions did not have more than 15-20 minutes to wait.
In 2021 things started quietly in January, then there was a modest increase in traffic in February, and things picked up in March and April as people started traveling more for spring break and Easter. The parks were incredibly crowded during those months, and even with reduced capacity, you can still feel the feeling that the parks were full.
There was a bit of a lull in May and June, then attendance exploded in July, and it felt like it had returned to normal Disney World audience levels. Much of this had to do with the increase in park capacity and the return of fireworks in the parks.
How Early Do You Need To Plan Your 2022 Disney World Vacation?
If you really want to look at the numbers, our friends at Thrill-data.com have some amazing graphs where you can see the steady increase in wait times throughout the year.
The table above shows the wait times for the Magic Kingdom from 2020 to December 2021. You can see that the average wait for a tourist attraction was less than 14 minutes when the theme parks reopened and reached 41 minutes by the end of this last year.
There was a big drop in August and September, like every year. In fact, in September, the average waiting time for all attractions was only 20 minutes, the lowest in more than a year.

October brings its 50th anniversary and things are something, not as much as I originally thought.
Once the festive season started, the parks were filled again, and last November and December were the first and third busiest months since they reopened.
So does this mean crowds will continue to grow in 2022 and beyond? Yes, we think there is a good chance this could happen.
Crowd Calendar Analysis: A Look At The 2021 2022 School Schedules
It is always crowded from September to December, spring and summer due to holidays and school schedules. However, the increases we saw over the past year were more due to the current health crisis, people are ready to travel again and the capacity of the park has increased significantly.
The low levels last year were due to several factors. Many local travelers were initially reluctant to travel, but after a few months decided they were more comfortable with the idea once they saw how Disney handled the changes and procedures. Some of these removed measures, such as the need to wear a face mask outside, probably helped to attract guests who wanted to wait earlier.
Also, many DVC members had to use their points from canceled flights in 2020 and earlier in 2021 and were "forced" to go to Disney World last year in order not to lose their points.

This year Disney has repeatedly increased attendance at its theme parks by over 35% (last actual number reported). Yes, guests must still use Disney's new Park Pass system to make park reservations, numbers are limited daily, but crowd levels are close to normal.
Recently, Disney CEO Bob Chabek stated that they will soon expand the park's capacity again "aggressively". This forecast was before the recent increase in new cases, but as the current health situation improves in the coming months, we expect the park's capacity to increase again.
As Disney becomes more efficient in managing the parks in this new "normal," Disney will slowly increase capacity to whatever level it can safely operate parks.
A Complete Guide To Events At Disney World In 2022
Travel restrictions initially played a big role in easing congestion, but that is less important now, with fewer restrictions on travel to the US now and the reopening of borders to travelers international. In 2022, people from Europe or South America will have more opportunities to visit WDW, which will help increase attendance.
Then there is the problem of economics. Originally we thought that this would be a bigger problem and that people would not get as much income for trips to theme parks and things like that. With consumer spending on the rise and Americans saving money like never before, that hasn't deterred visitors.
All of these are a combination of factors in the current crowd levels now occurring at Walt Disney World. Some of these factors should continue to improve in 2022, and we expect more people in the parks than last year.
