Cbia Members In The News

From the first permanent African-American settlement in Fort Myers to the founding of the Lee County Negro Society, the black experience in Lee County includes both oppression and triumph. The rich history begins with the arrival of Nelson Tellus in 1867. Eid Day The arrival of Tillis and the first railroad crossing the Calushahita in 1904 led to an increase in the African-American population, leading to the development of a segregated neighborhood known as Safety Hill. and Pinetaki. Along with the people, unbreakable foundations began to form, institutional pillars that are recognized today in the entire society. The community first saw the construction of churches in the late 1800s, as well as the founding of Williams Academy in 1912. Construction of Johns Walker Hospital would follow, as would Dunbar High School in 1926 and Safety Hill in 1946. It would be known as Dunbar Heights to better reflect the hopes and dreams of African Americans.

Members of the black community worshiped, learned, gathered, organized, and shared their lives in these sacred spaces. The pride of the community, these places nurture strong future business and civic leaders and promote the development of political, educational, spiritual and social voices involved in the exhibition. Of course, no victory can be achieved without overcoming obstacles. Lee County's long history proves time and time again that the Dunbar community stood firm against segregation, discrimination, Jim Crow laws and racial violence. "People" columns paved the way as they ran for public office, fought for integration and the right to vote, and documented news and current events through the lens of the black experience.

In the face of adversity, Fort Myers' black community has persevered, becoming an example of resilience for all citizens who call Southwest Florida home. The institutional pillars featured in the exhibition continue to amplify the voices and experiences of the community through success stories. Along with the Lee County Black Historical Society, multigenerational resident and local historian Jarrett Eddy, and the many residents who have brought history to life, Florida Gulf Coast University Archives and Special Collections is proud to present the Spring 2022 exhibit; The Black Experience in Lee County.
