Mccsc Calendar 2023
Mccsc Calendar 2023 – MCCSC is changing the start of the 2022-2023 school year to accommodate the bus driver shortage. It also raised the base wage for drivers to $2 an hour by 2023.
"The more start times we add to the schedule, the fewer drivers are needed and the more variety your route can include," said Adam Twillig, director of information technology.

There are currently about 80 drivers in the area, but 140 are needed for full equipment. This shortage causes drivers to use more routes than the current timetables allow.

Susan Scales drove the bus for 10 years but quit Friday morning. At the conference, he spoke about the driving forces of relationships with families and how he has seen students grow from kindergarten through high school. She said her goal was to become an 85-year-old driver who needs to be told to retire.
"I didn't reach that goal and I'm heartbroken," she said. "The core of our transport sector needs to be fixed."
According to the monthly personnel report, MCCSC has lost approximately 26 drivers and hired only four new drivers since May 2021. Seven other drivers were under arrest.

However, drivers will now receive a $1 base wage increase in August 2022 and another $1 increase in January 2023. Taking into account the additional increase in the latest union contract, drivers will earn between $21.59 and $27.05 an hour.
But Twillig said the region needs to address more than just payments. He compared the bus system to a dead plant in the corner.
"Giving it up is not going to help grow faster," he said. "He must also return to the light.

Terwilliger said 32 different buses were late at some point in March. Among them, 10 buses were late more than 7 times, and each bus was late for an average of 4-7 minutes a day. This means that students on these buses will miss about 30 minutes of school each week.
MCC signed a contract with School Bus Logistics to overhaul its transportation system in October 2021, and the company proposed 11 solutions. Superintendent Jeff Hauswald said the district knew the start time needed to be changed, but an investigation was used to determine the direction.
"The question is not, 'Do you want to change the time?'" Hauswald said. "He's trying to lead us.

Overall MKCCC start time survey results. The respondents expressed their support for adjusting the school schedule according to the age of the children. MCSCSC received 3577 responses to the household survey. (
"We have rider support and we're having a dialogue," board member April Hennessey said. "We have the support of the union and there is a dialogue going on. I hope we also have the support of the community through the ongoing dialogue."
Teachers union president Paul Farmer said in an email to WFIU that the union neither supports nor opposes the proposed schedule changes, but is in discussions with the administration.

"We have a lot of concerns and since this is not a contractual matter, the law requires us to use the discussion process," he said. "We are supporting the discussion process and holding meetings with the government to express our concerns."
Hauswald said that to reduce the pressure the change could put on households that are disproportionately affected, the government plans to use ESSER funds to provide free extended day programs and services to families, as well as free and reduced lunches. In addition, MCCSC will double the program's current capacity of approximately 250 students.
The program includes preschool and after-school tutoring and educational activities in 14 elementary schools. Morning classes start at 7:00 a.m. and cost $7.75 per day. The afternoon part continued until five o'clock in the afternoon. $8.75 per day.
Monroe County Schools Bus Service Remains In Limbo
Although eight elementary school schedules have changed, the start and end times of daily program services will not change. The board must formally approve the expansion at a future meeting.

The move to a four-stage system will eliminate 38 bus routes, reducing the number of drivers, said Adam Terwilliger, MCCSC assistant director of business operations. By shifting the times, drivers can travel and cover more area on earlier and later routes.
MCCSC high schools and colleges currently have classes from 8:00 a.m. at 2:55 p.m. m. and elementary schools from 9:00 a.m. m. at 3:45 p.m. m. In this two-tier system, the company would need 140 drivers to be fully staffed. Currently it is around 80.
MCCSC is one of many school transportation systems across the country experiencing a shortage of school bus drivers. This not only burdened the remaining MCCSC drivers, but also put students and families in an uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous situation.
Mccsc Experiences Late Buses On First Day Of 2022 2023 School Year
Earlier this week, MCCSC mom Kelly Pitner posted a photo of her daughter on Facebook from a bus carrying students from Bloomington High School North and Tri-North Middle School. Photos showed a row of students sitting on the floor of the bus, blocking the exits and leaving no place to sit.
Students often start school so late that it is already open by the time they arrive. In the past month, 32 buses have been late, Terwilliger said.
Some of the remaining bus drivers previously complained about a lack of respect from the company's transportation department and criticized their hourly pay rates, which they said did not reflect the responsibilities and stress added to their plates.

As buses age, new timetables will require fewer buses and fewer purchases of replacements; savings will be used to raise driver wages at the request of the American Federation of County and City Employees, Local 3995. The school board approved hourly raises of $1 per hour for bus drivers, monitors and technicians beginning in August 2022 and another $1 per hour for an hour in January 2023.
Susan Scales has been a bus driver for 10 years and has built relationships with countless students and families. She said she gave out her personal phone number to hundreds of parents and watched their children grow before her eyes.
"We wipe our noses. We tie our shoes. We dry our tears. Sometimes they're our own," he told the board. "We broke up and this happened. We built relationships. It didn't take long to build relationships with the kids."

She said she once helped a student who was having suicidal thoughts. For another student trying to figure out how to pay for college, explain the difference between grants and loans. The preschooler told him that he dreams of being a bus driver one day.
"I left … not because I wanted to leave, not because of the routes, not because of COVID, not because of the times of school reorganization, not because of that," he said. "It broke my heart, the core of the project I have to fix the Department of Transportation."
Starting in October 2021, MCCSC is partnering with Colorado-based consulting firm School Bus Logistics to help find ways to alleviate the driver shortage.

That included a route efficiency study, an analysis of the impact of changing school start and end times and a community survey that received nearly 2,800 responses, Terwilliger said.
Although the company has been working with schools for about six months, the survey was sent to parents only about two weeks ago.
The survey asked about the comfort level of households at different start and end times (from one hour earlier to one hour later). The survey did not allow respondents to answer on behalf of several children.
Mccsc School Board Changes Start Times For 2022 23 Due To Bus Crisis
About half of those surveyed said they were reluctant to start school 15 minutes earlier, and about half said they were reluctant to leave school 30 minutes later. However, the survey showed that respondents generally prefer finishing primary school later than starting secondary school earlier.
"While a 60-minute extension of the current total operating time is needed/recommended, we recommend the district a minimum of 45 minutes to create a bus route that can be fully staffed with current staffing levels," the company's summary reads
The company also proposed other measures, such as redesigning the transit building to "improve safety and efficiency in line with industry standards."

In recent years, other school districts across the country, including the Martinsville Metropolitan School District, have moved to staggered start times between elementary, middle and high schools.
Supervisor Jeff Hauswald acknowledged that while the changes will help recruit new drivers, the company may never reach the 140 drivers needed for the two-tier system.
Ten parents and bus drivers spoke about the bus during the board's public comment Tuesday. They expressed concern about issues related to intelligence. A parent was taken away by security for yelling at board members.

Some parents began objecting to some elementary schools as early as 9:30 a.m., leaving working parents wondering how they would supervise their young children while they waited for the bus. Others worry about how a late release will limit time later
