San Marcos Unified School District Calendar 2023-2024 – Almost everyone agrees that it was a good idea to combine the Tempe Union, Cyrene and Tempe district calendars, but there is near-unanimous support for the 2-2-2 companion calendar adopted by the three districts for 2023-24. school starts on July 19. – Tempe Elementary School District photo

Each of the three boards this month independently and unanimously approved not only the same calendars, but the adoption of a modified year-round schedule — known as 2-2-2 — with two weeks off for fall break and two weeks off for winter break and two weeks off for spring break.

This, in turn, shortens summer vacation, which educators advocate because, they say, it helps students retain information from one school year to the next. As a result, school will start earlier. The 2023/24 academic year begins on July 19.
The 2-2-2 calendar is similar to the one used by the Chandler Unified School District for the past several years.
Over the past year, a seven-member panel of representatives from TUHSD, Cyrene and Tempe Elementary has considered the pros and cons of the plan. Conducted a survey of interested parties of the district about possible changes. Of the more than 8,000 responses, the numbers were close, with 46 percent in favor of the change, 42 percent opposed, and 11 percent undecided. These results show that not all families are crazy about the new design.

"(The study) revealed the different ways our families and staff interact," said Lisa Gibson, CEO of Kyrene Talent Management.
While the same calendars are expected to be more convenient for planning for families with students in more than one of these areas, a potential disadvantage could be the need for additional childcare during the three extended breaks. Gibson said the three districts are looking for low-cost babysitters before and after school and during recess.
Speakers at the Tempe Union High School board meeting who opposed the change cited a majority of TUHSD families voting no, higher child care costs and the need for more summer time off for both students and teachers.

"With the calendar, we give our families a whole year ahead," said TUHSD Superintendent Kevin J. Mendiville. "Today I am glad that we are working on something like a partnership in three countries, because we have many families. I've been here for 11 years and I know from talking to teachers and staff that this is something they wanted to explore."
TUHSD board member Sarah James added that her younger sisters and husband attend the schools year-round and have had a "really positive experience."
"I sympathize with the reluctance to do that, that's normal for a change," James said. "But as a district, we need to listen to our families and students and make some improvements."

Burdetta Hodge, a TUHSD board member who was recently elected to the Tempe City Council, said she was excited to be "joining our additional schools," but added concern about parents waiting for childcare during long school breaks.
Among the benefits cited by the committee for the 2-2-2 format are year-round learning to better bridge the school years and help students retain information, additional opportunities throughout the school year for targeted learning support for students, expanded professional development opportunities for staff, and benefits programs and extracurricular activities that fit the school calendar.
The Kieran School District sent a letter to parents saying the calendar committee is working to "harmonize the calendar to better serve our families and staff with children who are in different districts. The committee reviewed survey results from all three districts, calendar trends in surrounding districts and best practices for student learning.

"Kieren School District will have a full year to prepare for this transition to respond to the unique needs of families and staff, from child care options to work schedules. More information will be provided next year."

In his freshman year of high school, he exhausted the math courses available to him and enrolled early at Rice University, intending to use his relationship with the Johnson Space Center to become an aerospace engineer. But as a high school student who needed classes in non-math sports, he picked up the college newspaper for a score and was hooked. He studied journalism at the UofA and worked as a senior reporter, editor-in-chief for several Valley publications.
