Western Michigan University (WMU) is a public research university in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Founded in 1903 by Dwight B. Waldo. As of the fall 2019 semester, its enrollment was 21,470.
The university's athletic teams compete in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and are known as the Western Michigan Broncos. They compete in the Mid-American Conference in most sports.
On May 27, 1903, Michigan Governor Aaron T. Bliss signed a bill authorizing the establishment of the state's fourth teacher training institution.

The other three elementary schools were Ypsilanti (East), Mount Pleasant (Ctral) and Marquette (North). On August 28, 1903, Kalamazoo was selected as the site of the new school. Located on Bernhard Cter, Bronco Mall is a one-stop shop with a large 24-hour computer lab, subway food court, Biggby Coffee, The Burger Bros, and plenty of tables and chairs for dining and socializing. West Campus is home to Miller Hall. With a seating capacity of approximately 3,500, the Great Hall is the fourth largest in Michigan. Miller Auditorium hosts events such as popular musicals, concerts, proms and film screenings. Directly adjacent to Miller Auditorium is the Gilmore Theater Complex with three performance stages and faculty offices. In 2007, the Richmond Arts Complex was added to the Arts Complex, and in 2008, South Kohrman Hall was renamed Kohrman Hall Studios. Both buildings house the Gw Frostic School of Art.

The East Campus is the first development since the university was founded in 1903. It includes many of the university's historic buildings, including East Hall, West Hall, North Hall, Walwood Hall, Spindler Hall, Vandercook Hall, and the Little Theater. Many of these buildings are located on a hill overlooking the city of Kalamazoo. Walwood Hall, renovated in 1992, houses the Graduate College, the Graduate Student Advisory Committee, the Medieval Institute, the WMU Research Office, and several other academic and administrative offices.
In December 2012, WMU announced plans to renovate its birthplace, historic East Hall, as an alumni center. He also announced plans to demolish the university's original historic buildings and use the top of the hill as green space.
The original part of the east hall is preserved, but the north hall and two side wings of the east hall have fallen. East Hall reopened in 2015 as the Legacy Hall of WMU Alumni Hall.

A Master of Science in Engineering Management (MSEM) is being offered in Punta Gorda at the WMU Punta Gorda Campus in Fall 2018. The MSEM program is globally accredited by the American Society of Engineering Management (ASEM). The 30-credit program is offered in a hybrid format, with monthly in-person lessons augmented by online learning.
The Aviation College operates a fleet of Cirrus SR-20s and a turbine test site. In addition, the Aviation College maintains a fleet of Piper PA-44 Seminoles, Cirrus SR-22, Piper PA-18 Super Cub and American Decathlon Champion used for flight training. The facility is located at WK Kellogg Airport in Battle Creek, Michigan.
Due to high demand for training, the City of Battle Bay and the Air National Guard Aviation College built a new runway west of and parallel to the original runway. This makes Battle Creek's main runway 23R and the new runway 23L. The cost of the project was approximately 7 million US dollars, 95 percent of which was provided by the government. The track is now fully "functional".

From August 2017 to August 2019, Western Michigan University operated a satellite campus in Punta Gorda, Florida, near the Punta Gorda Airport, with additional facilities located at the airport.
