At the annual fall opening meeting of the faculty and staff, the students reminded them of their mission. New student and Honors College member Zinedine Partipilo Cornielles fled Venezuela with her family and settled in Howard County for stability and access to education. "When I first entered college, I felt overwhelmed. Not only because of what college means in everyone's life, but also because of how incredible the school was," said Partipilo Cornielles. "I saw that there were so many opportunities for everyone."

The first day of school came soon. Students on this program are keen to apply their skills and interest in the life sciences to create innovative biotechnology solutions that transform the health, agriculture and environmental sectors. This fall, they will make their home at Shady Grove's Institute for Biomedical Sciences and Engineering (BSE) Education.

What We Do

While it's not all fun and games during the first week of the fall semester, there are some literal games as the football teams begin their new season. In the opening game against St. Francis, the women's team held the score at 2-2 going into overtime. The men's national football team will play Megteslesült Sozö at 19:00. on August 30, giving new and returning retrievers a chance to join their voices in one big WOOF WOOF as they cheer on the team.

While this is a fast-paced introduction to campus, Welcome Week allows incoming students to bond and learn about the experience of returning retrievers. Whether it's a pool party, morning yoga by the library pond, or a "unit network" community activity, students use this week to build relationships that will serve as a foundation for their years here.

"I'm excited to see what these students can do," says Bittinger. "I don't even know if they know what they're capable of, but I hope they discover their place in the world here. I'm as excited as they are to see them succeed."

New students won't get to experience walking through a tunnel of cheering faculty and staff to Convocation this fall, but the Retriever community is working hard to show the incoming class how important they are through special online events, personal messages, and a new also a welcome box full of equipment.

The latest batch of Retrievers includes more than 1,600 first-year students and nearly 1,000 transfer students. They have set an impressive academic record for themselves, with an average SAT score for the Class of 2024 of 1266. Equally important are strengths that are less easily quantified.

These new retrievers are coming off a challenging spring, transitioning quickly into the virtual environment and missing important milestones like in-person graduation. "I am extremely excited about the students applying to this year's class, especially in light of the challenges related to the COVID-19 disease that many have faced as they finalize their college choices," says Dale Bittinger '16, M.P.P., vice president of undergraduate admissions and orientation. and school partnerships.

Tchuissi Mbu Nyamsi enrolled at M.P.S. data science program at Shady Grove campuses. She shared her international journey at the university's annual Fall Commencement on August 20, emphasizing key values: respect for diversity and the importance of empowerment and determination.

"I want to empower and inspire the younger generation by proving that anything is possible if you are laser-focused and work hard strategically," said Nyamsi. "As a cosmopolitan woman who has lived in Brazil, Spain and now the United States, I want to emphasize the importance of being open to different cultures and learning new languages."

Rpi Is Struggling With Admissions And Retention

Around 300 participants typically come to the autumn opening meeting. This year, nearly 900 teachers, staff and students signed up for the community event held a week before the start of classes.
