School Calendar & Hours
In a 6-1 vote, with two abstentions, the Aiken County Board of Education approved the revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday night.
Under the revised calendar, students will have a shorter summer, instead getting a two-week break in the fall and spring semesters. One of the weeks in each semester will be Remedial Week, which will give students who need academic help an opportunity to receive it.
In the revised 2023-24 calendar, students will begin classes on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Fall vacation is scheduled for October 2-13, with October 2-6 as a week of prayer. Thanksgiving will be November 22-24. Student Christmas break will be from December 20, 2023 to January 3, 2024. Spring Break will be April 1-12, and the Week of Prayer is expected to be April 1-5, 2024. The last day of school will be Thursday. , May. 30, 2024.

Other calendar holidays include Labor Day on September 4, 2023. Weather Day Friday October 20; Martin Luther King Jr. Day: January 15; Holiday and President's Day Friday, February 16 and Monday, February 19, 2024. Weather makeup day Thursday, March 28; And last Friday: Friday, March 29, 2024.
Councilman Jason Crane was the lone vote against the calendar. At the meeting, he expressed concern about how the calendar would affect a variety of programs, including athletics, band and performing arts at Gateway.
The Aiken County Board of Education will vote on the proposed calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday.

"I'm concerned that the short winter will affect the game, the team and Gateway," Crain said after the meeting. "I'm sure the district will work with them, but I see it as a big problem for us. It's my conscience."
Crane said he supports the revised calendar proposal, which would give him a two-week break each semester.
"…I'm not really sold because we need two weeks to rest," Crain said. "I think one week will be enough, but the board voted for what we chose, and I support it moving forward."

Aiken County Superintendent King Lawrence said at the meeting that the summer of 2023 will be tough for band because there is usually a three-week summer band camp. But there are many options for team leaders.
Lawrence mentioned that the competition was held statewide and that there were different schools in South Carolina. He suggested having a music camp for a week in the summer and using prayer times at many group camps.

"Yeah, you're used to having a three-week band camp in the summer, but what does it mean to have a one-week band camp in the summer and use those time slots for additional band camps," Lawrence said. "Two weeks of team camp in the summer and one in the fall. I'm trying to get people to look at things differently and adapt.
Regarding the game schedule, Lawrence said the game schedules are set by the state, so they are not affected much. Practices, especially summer practices, and their times must change.
"Football and other fall sports will be (sports) during the offseason," Lawrence said. "It's no different than basketball with baseball and softball during spring break."

Another concern was how the two-week recovery would work. Crain said he's not sure a two-week vacation will accomplish their goals and has heard from people who feel the same way.

"We were able to fit 30 minutes into each day [of the school year]," Lawrence said. "A thirty-minute activity is a big, deep way for our students to work in small groups. So for five days you earn 50 times more than you would earn on a school day. That one week of intervention could be 30 minutes at a time over 50 days of intervention during the school year.

"Anything we can do for these students is geared toward helping them succeed next quarter," Lawrence said. "I think we can do a lot of good in that week. We heard from a school district a few weeks ago that saw results using a one-week intervention."

As for Gateway, Lawrence said it should be 30 days, and he's seeing how the 30 days works, the possibilities he mentioned were 20 or 25 days in the summer and five days in the fall, or five days in the fall and spring. .
"After the first year, things get easier because you have an extra week," Lawrence said. "The extra week doesn't seem like much, but the extra week gives you a little more flexibility to prepare for the summer."

The school board president Dr. John Bradley said he was skeptical of the revised calendar, but the majority of respondents agreeing with it helped him vote to approve it.
"When I voted, I knew we were causing a lot of trouble for some people," Bradley said. "I'm sorry about that. But again, I feel like we should do what most people want to do, with or without reason."
At their Jan. 25 meeting, board members agreed to move toward the revised calendar proposal, but did not approve the actual calendar at that time.
