Usd Academic Calendar 2023-24 – With the support of GPS families and staff, Gilbert Public Schools will officially transition to the new academic calendar beginning in the 2022-2023 school year. The new calendar means students and staff have two weeks off during fall, winter and spring break. The board formally adopted the new schedule in February 2021 after a survey showed GPS families and employees supported the change.
The school year will begin 8 calendar days earlier than the current school year, with the first day of classes on July 26, 2022. An earlier start provides students with more opportunities for enrichment courses and academic interventions as needed. On-campus teachers in our school continue to receive professional development training consistent with the previous school calendar. While the fall and spring breaks have been extended, we are very careful not to disrupt the learning environment.

Gilbert Public Schools will have similar schedules to nearby areas, including Chandler USD, Higley USD and Queen Creek USD. GPS students and staff will continue to spend the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the shortened Spring Break weekend. Taking breaks makes it easier for families to prioritize spending time together and plan travel. For families concerned with their childcare needs, Gilbert Public Schools continues to offer a wide range of programs, youth sports events and vacation camps for your consideration.

In primary education, where plans are being made for the start of the school year, summer temperatures could become an issue, depending on the days of outdoor recreation. On days with heatstroke warnings, GPS Elementary students will remain indoors and board games, videos and other alternative activities will be provided during recess. The school determines appropriate activities based on the needs of the students.
The new school calendar means there will be four seasons of athletics on the GPS Middle School campus, and each school will be able to add men's volleyball to its sports roster. Children's football in Years 7 and 8 will also be expanded. The minor league season lasts nine weeks, including the playoffs, with an adjusted schedule. Gilbert Youth Athletics also offers further player development opportunities. The 2022-2023 High School Athletic Schedule is now available online. GPS athletes and their families with questions about the impact of their schedules on high school athletics can contact their school's campus athletic director. The Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) continues to oversee and administer GPS high school athletics.
The new calendar changes will also apply to the 2023-2024 school year. The first full-day session for the grade is July 25, 2023.
