Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District
The Cy-Fair ISD school board approved the school calendar for the 2021-2022 school year at its Jan. 14 board meeting.
The calendar was prepared by the committee established in the fall semester of 2020, the district press reports.
"The committee was comprised of district-wide representation, including teachers, parents, community members, campus administrators and support staff," the district said in a press release. "The committee sought public input online as it worked to create a calendar using the 75,600 minutes required to complete one school year as required by law."

According to the calendar, the first day of school for students for the 2021-2022 school year will be August 23, 2021 — the earliest start date for the school year.
"State law mandates that instruction for the school year not begin before the fourth Monday in August," the press release said.

Cy Woods' FFA horse judging team has been awarded the 2020 Texas Horse Cup, Cy-Fair ISD announced in a press release.
The horse judging event helps teach students equine science by "evaluating and ranking horses based on breed characteristics, conformation and performance," according to a press release. The winning team was determined based on the results of nine races. The team won the award with 1301 points.
Judging on Cy Woods included sophomore Grace Ehrenfeld and 2020 graduates Thomas Binig, Katelyn Morgan and Kathy Halaska.

"I couldn't be more proud of this horse judging team," Cypress Woods FFA and horse judging advisor Monica McClellan said in a press release. "They have worked hard and remained flexible through all the changes and challenges this 2020 horse judging season has brought. There is no second team that deserves this award."
Halaska was a top 10 individual finisher coming in fourth with 1,015. Jersey Village 2020 grad Cale Essman won the individual Cup with a total of 1,218 points.
"Cale is a true leader and has led our horse judging team to many great successes," said Amber Hibdon, Jersey Village FFA and horse judging advisor, in a press release. "He set the bar high for other team members and every new member. Cale always made sure he was ready for the races and constantly encouraged the other team members. Cale has put in the time, dedication and hard work to succeed and we are proud to see it pay off for him and to see him represent Jersey Village FFA so well.

Keith Elementary School Principal Dawn Tryon and Cypress Springs Principal Dr. Cheryl Henry was selected by Cy-Fair ISD principals as the district representative for this school year's Region 4 Principal of the Year award, the district announced in a news release.
Tryon has been the principal of Keith Elementary since 2017 and has more than two decades of experience in classroom and administrative education. Henry has been principal of Cy Springs since 2015 and has over three decades of experience in classroom and administrative education.
More than 85 theater arts students from several Cy-Fair ISD high schools took first and second place during the Virtual Texas Thespian Festival, held over several weekends from Oct. 24 to Dec. 5. states.

The achievement earned these students the right to participate in the national competition, which will be held virtually from June 22 to June 25 and will be sponsored by the Teaching Theater Association.
The Cy Falls Sky Dancers received a special visit on January 8 from Kilgore College Rangerettes Bailey Stark and Hannah Moss. Cy Ranch alumni visiting to recruit dancers also took the opportunity to teach the Sky Dancers a dance combination, a district press release details.
Caitlin Beresford, assistant director of Sky Dancer, was also a Rangerette who she previously said was famous for her "precision and discipline".

"It's important that you take some time to find the excitement in the passion in dance, and I did my best to help the training team do that," she said. "They were very diligent and receptive to what I had to share. I would like to work with these girls again, because I really liked it."
Lee Elementary fifth-grader Aroob Latif won his school's spelling bee for the third year in a row on Dec. 15 with the word "bitumen" and will compete in the Cy-Fair ISD Elementary Spelling Bee, set for Feb. 2.
According to the district's press service, Latif likes to learn new words and works with his parents to prepare for the spelling bee.

"I am honored to have another opportunity to compete in the district spelling bee," she said. "I wanted to do it again because I really enjoy it and this is my last year."
The 2016 Lone Star College-University Park graduate recently became a published author, writing a self-help book titled Cultivate a Genius Mindset: Unleash Your Full Potential and Achieve Unbelievable Success.
The author, Jesse Rodriguez, wrote the book for Purist Publishing and said it reflects his research on statistics and facts that show successful people all have mentors, are goal-oriented, highly motivated, and disciplined. LSC-University Park said in a news release.

Rodriguez, who is nearly finished earning a bachelor's degree in technical communications from the University of Houston-Downtown, credits LSC-University Park and UHD for her self-sufficiency and confidence, and said her education gave her the key skills to be. one writer, detailed release.
He had been on the LSC-University Park campus long before his student days, when it was still the office of Compaq Computers, where he worked as a janitor. He wrote about the experience in an essay that won him an award from the Lone Star College Foundation.
"I roamed the dark, lonely halls of Compaq as a janitor, cleaning their offices and trying to earn an honest living," Rodriguez writes in the essay. "When it came time to pursue my dream of going back to school, LSC-University Park provided the perfect, if not coincidental, answer. The college was very convenient and very close. There was no excuse for me not to participate."

While attending college, Rodriguez also had to care for his widowed mother and his 10-year-old son, whom he raised alone. And he still had time to meet with dozens of tutors at school to help him with his writing.
